The Committee for Hispanic Children
and Families, Inc. Since 1982, New York-based The Committee for Hispanic Children and Families, Inc. (CHCF) has been dedicated to improving the quality of life for Latino children and their families. Believing that the most effective way to serve Latino families is by building upon their existing strengths and fostering self-sufficiency, CHCF provides a number of programs and services to the community in the areas of Youth Development, Early Care and Education, and Family Health Education. Grounded in its direct services, CHCF is active on the local, state and national policy arena around issues of child welfare and the well-being of Latino children. A key program is the Healthy Living Summer Program, designed to combat obesity, a major problem for Latinos. In the Central Bronx, where the Healthy Living Summer Program is offered, 60% of adults are or obese. Obesity raises the risk of many serious health complications, including diabetes, heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, depression, and even cancer. This program combines nutrition, exercise, and stress-relief techniques and strives to involve the whole family and community. Featured are:
